Waiting for our Missing Piece…

Adoption (a dop` tion) n. 1. Building a family through the process of concentrated, dedicated, enduring love, rather than biology.

We are adopting!!!

We are so deeply excited. This has been on Joel and my heart for a few years now, especially when we realized we were struggling with infertility. Our vision for our home was always for Elias to have a younger sibling. In fact, when I brought the idea of adoption up to Elias he was over the moon with excitement, but then said, “It’s hard for me to trust you and Dad will follow up with this.”

And he had a good point, because a few years back we had started out on this journey, only to be scared away by the mountains of paperwork, and invasive personal questions, and financial expectations. Here’s a glimpse into what I am talking about: Home study fee: 1600.00 Fees within the home study for back ground checks: 300.00 Adoption Profile Creation Fee: 350.00 Consultant fee: 3600.00 Adoption agency fee: 25,000 Birth Mom expenses: 1500.00 per month until baby is born. Birth Mom New Housing Post Baby Birth: Deposit and First months rent Travel Expenses: To Be Determined depending on baby birth state. Lawyer Fees in both states: Our state, Babies state. There are so many moving parts and people involved in every adoption, therefore contributing to many variable expenses and combinations of small service fees and hourly charges that can make the total cost unpredictable and overwhelming.

Celebrating!!!

Today we have funded all the way through to the Adoption agency fee. This will be paid when we match with a baby! Our consultant sends us birth mom profiles, submitted to her from 40+ agencies and lawyers. We read the birth mom’s story, and decide whether or not we want to submit our story to her. Once submitted, we wait! And can I just say this is where the roller coaster of emotions happens. The passing of days and the wondering if this is the baby God has picked for us. Oh, the compassion for the expectant mom and her emotions reviewing the adoptive families presented to her.

This journey of domestic adoption has opened our eyes to the love these moms have for their children. Presently, for all kinds of reasons these mom’s don’t have the financial resources and safe home for their babies to flourish. These women wanting nothing more than to hold their babies close. The wrestling between their life circumstances and the awaiting adoption families situations. The desire for their little one to have a better chance at life. The choosing to extend their arms past themselves and offer extra love, extra holding… more safety for their children. I don’t know about you, but that makes my heart ache and inspire, all at the same time!

We continue to:

…financially put aside savings every week, get approved for adoption loans, and are now extending our arms past ourselves and creating space for our friends and loved ones to join us in bringing our missing piece home.
